The term ‘Local Offer’ is used by local authorities across the UK to give children and young people with special educational needs or disabilities and their families information about what support services are available in their local area. Ellern Mede Moorgate School in Rotherham is part of the SEN local offer in Rotherham.
Ellern Mede Moorgate School has been rated “Good” and provides therapeutic learning for 12 boys and girls aged 11 to 18 years in a small, safe environment. The students who come to the school are patients at Ellern Mede hospitals funded by their relevant local authority.
Ellern Mede Moorgate School’s academic staff cover a broad curriculum which includes English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, History, Music, Drama, Spanish, French and German. An Inclusion Lead supervises student engagement, assessment and identifies future learning pathways.
The school follows the national curriculum with personalised timetables for all students so they can work at their own pace. We offer opportunities for mainstream inclusion through links and partnership with local colleges. Students are supported in very small class sizes and the curriculum is tailored to meet their needs and abilities.
The highly specialist, therapeutic educational team works closely with the multi-disciplinary medical and mental health resources of the Ellern Mede hospital teams, a unique opportunity for pupils to receive specialist advice.
Staff mentor students throughout their time at the school, and work directly at home and with families to encourage a positive relationship between the family, student and school.
Even although Ellern Mede Moorgate Schools are closely linked with Ellern Mede hospitals, they are separately funded and referrals and arrangements must be made either through the relevant local authority or if the child is privately educated, funding has to be arranged privately with parents, guardians or carers. On referral, the school will liaise with the home school, the clinical teams treating the young person, the funders and will make a decision to offer a placement that is suited to the child’s or young person’s need if appropriate, or make some suggestions for who to go to for advice as to any other suitable educational support placement.
